Thanksgiving Traditions in the Adirondacks!
Each year, Americans celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday on the fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving is on Thursday November 27th this year.
Thanksgiving and traditions go hand-in-hand. Most people look forward to the Thanksgiving day feast and getting together with family and friends Many families go around the table and have everyone say what they are most thankful for. The common traditional Thanksgiving dinner consists of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, breads, cranberries and other family specialties. In the Adirondacks nontraditional foods such as venison, pheasant or smoked trout can be found on the table as well squash topped with native maple syrup.

Outdoor photographer Carl Heilman II has lived in the Adirondacks in upstate New York since he moved to the region in 1973 to live in his parents' summer home. Carl Heilman II has been photographing the Adirondack wilderness landscape since 1975, working to capture on film both the grandeur of these special places, and the emotional and spiritual connection he has felt as well.

Moose in the Adirondacks! The moose population in the Adirondacks appears to be on the rise.The NYS DEC reports that indicators of the moose population size, such as reported sightings and confirmed moose-vehicle collisions, appear to be rising after several years of remaining fairly constant. The moose 'rut' or breeding season extends from September through November and the number of moose sightings goes dramatically up in this time period. Motorists should take extra caution on the roads at dusk and dawn because this is when moose and deer are most active. These moose pictured below were taken by Jason Colby . He states "The one without snow was taken on November 7, 2008. The snowy one was taken November 10, 2008. Both sets were taken along side Rt. 73 just outside of Lake Placid near the Cascade Ski Touring Center. There are supposed to be four moose living there." Jason added that the only time he saw the bull moose of the group he did not have his camera.

Hiking the Adirondacks in the Fall
Fall is some of the best time to hit the trails in the Adirondacks. The crowds of people are gone, the air is crisp and the animals are scurrying around preparing for the long winter ahead. There are over fifty different species of animals that call the Adirondacks home. From black bear, & white tailed deer to ermine and fishers - spotting wildlife on a fall hike is an enjoyable way to spend a day. Please remember the daylight is shorter in the fall and as the sun dips the temperature drops considerably. Prepare for your hike by layering clothing and having a pack for food, matches, and other emergency supplies. Always hike in a group and let someone else know of your planned route. Fall snow storms can blow into the high peaks of the Adirondacks and dump feet of snow in a short time. Be prepared. Check the local weather forecast before you head off into the woods and always use the trail registers.

The High Peaks Region in the Adirondacks is famous for its magnificant 46 peaks including Mt. The Northville - Placid Trail
The Northville Placid Trail is a 133 mile walking / hiking path that goes through the heart of the Adirondack wilderness in New York State. The trail crosses the Adirondack wilderness by means of a low lying path. Adirondack History & its Museums
The history of the Adirondacks has been shaped and influenced by many powerful forces. Logging, mining, farming, tourism and even medicine have all played a major role in the development of the region. In the early 1800's, towns like St. Regis, Paul Smiths and Old Forge sprang up taking advantage of the vast timber resources and iron ore deposits. In the central Adirondacks, pioneers cleared the large tracts of land for farming creating the first settlements. And beginning in the late nineteenth century, the Adirondacks became a popular destination for the rich and famous. Historic Saranac Lake
Historic Saranac Lake, a not-for-profit organization, formed to seek National Register of Historic Places listing for buildings in and around Saranac Lake, New York, works to encourage historic preservation in the community through education and research.
